Buying from the USA online using a package forwarding service – the basics

With recent reports indicating that 45% of Australia’s online shopping dollars being spent overseas and the major destination being the USA, it’s important that you as a consumer understand the basics of buying from the USA online.

The first question that should be asked is why?

Why are Australians spending dollars overseas instead of locally? Varying consumer needs determine the answer to this question; however the major reason is price. Research shows that most retail products cost much less in the USA than Australia, particularly electronics, cosmetics and sporting goods. Other reasons consumers seek goods from overseas include being trend innovators or to obtain goods not available in Australia, particularly motor or electronic parts.

Second basic is to understand how?

An increasing number of USA retailers are shipping internationally allowing you to have goods shipped directly to your Australian address. Despite the increasing number there continues to be a number of popular retailers who do not ship internationally, therefore requiring consumers to utilise the services of a package forwarding company.

A package forwarding company provides a USA address where consumer goods are received and then on forwarde to Australian delivery addresses. Consumer packages can be consolidated from multiple retailers resulting in shipping prices being reduced in comparison to shipping individual packages from separate retailers.

Importantly to note, is that it is a legitimate method to receive goods with the majority of package forwarding companies utilising the reputable services of air courier companies such as DHL, FedEx and USPS.

Final basic to understand is what?

The answer to this is how long is a piece of string….or more appropriately how much money do you have in the bank. Despite the availability of a wide range of consumer goods you will need to be aware of some restrictions.

Firstly custom regulations in Australia, before placing an order for any goods from the US retailers, it is advisable that you inquire with your package forwarding provider or Australian Customs to make sure that it is restricted or forbidden to be shipped to Australia. These restrictions are the same as those that apply when you return by air from an overseas trip including but not limited to animals, certain food products, weapons etc.

Secondly air courier restrictions, air couriers including USPS will not ship dangerous or hazardous items including perfumes or pressurized cans as this are either flammable or can potentially explode due to air pressure. Before placing an order it is a good idea to inquire with your package forwarding provider if you are in doubt as to whether your goods would be classified as dangerous or hazardous.
